Personal Health Budgets
Some people with long-term complex health needs qualify for free health and social care arranged and funded solely by the NHS. This is known as NHS continuing healthcare.
If you’re eligible for NHS continuing healthcare, the next stage is to arrange a care and support package that meets your assessed needs.
Depending on your situation, different options could be suitable, including support in your own home and the option of a personal health budget.
Personal Health Budgets
Many people who are eligible for NHS Continuing Health Care (CHC) funding choose to receive this via a Personal Health Budget (PHB).
A PHB gives you, the client, more flexibility over how your care and support is arranged and provided, rather than this being arranged for you.
Who can receive a PHB?
If you’re an adult or you have a child in receipt of NHS Continuing Health Care funding, you can request a PHB.

Disability Positive is a local not-for-profit organisation which supports people throughout the North West who have PHBs.
They’re contracted with local NHS ICBs to help people understand and manage everything to do with Direct Payments and Personal Health Budgets, including advice, advocacy and supported banking. You can find out more on the Disability Positive website
